Next Tuesday, the final primary of 2024 will determine the nominees in the most competitive gubernatorial race this cycle.
With New Hampshire Republican Gov. Chris Sununu not seeking a fifth two-year term, Democrats finally have a chance to flip a seat that has vexed them for eight years. This is the only contest for governor we still rate as a Toss Up, and Republicans are hopeful their likely nominee, former Sen. Kelly Ayotte, can keep the governor’s mansion in GOP hands.
But in the Live Free or Die State, Ayotte’s biggest hurdles will be defending herself on abortion rights and former President Donald Trump’s position atop the ballot — which doomed her 2016 Senate reelection bid.
While Ayotte is heavily favored to win the Republican nomination over former state Senate President Chuck Morse, the Democratic contest has devolved into mudslinging in the race’s final weeks — something Republicans are gleeful to see in a reversal of typically messy, late GOP primaries that have handicapped their nominees.
Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig began the contest as the Democratic frontrunner over Executive Councillor
