Highlights from last night's primaries in Alaska and Florida:

  • Alaska Republicans struggle to match Peltola in Alaska’s all-party primary.
  • Rep. Matt Gaetz easily wins, despite heavy spending against him by a super PAC aligned with former Speaker McCarthy.
  • Democrat Whitney Fox cruises to an easy primary win to challenge controversial GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna in Republican-leaning FL-13.
Alaska

Alaska is home to one of the Democrats’ most vulnerable incumbents, Rep. Mary Peltola. The congresswoman represents the entire state, which voted for Trump by 10 points in 2020 and is likely to do so again in 2024. But Peltola’s independent streak and the state’s nontraditional electoral system give her an advantage over her Republican opponents.

Under Alaska’s system, the top four candidates on the all-party primary ballot ascend to the general election, which is then conducted using ranked-choice voting. With an estimated 87% of votes counted, Peltola led the primary field with over 50%, an impressive margin for the incumbent that could bode well for the November contest — she could win the general election outright if she received a majority of the vote.
