
Southern California residents have spent the beginning of the year recovering from some of the most destructive wildfires ever to engulf the state. That has consumed the attention of Greater Los Angeles’ congressional delegation, which has pushed hard for federal relief — even as President Donald Trump has threatened to add conditions on federal aid for the state.
The political consequences of the tragedy remain to be seen. But the southern half of the state is certain to host several House districts that could determine which party wins control of the House next year.
In Orange County, freshman Democratic Reps. Derek Tran (CA-45) and Dave Min (CA-47) are defending competitive seats, while GOP Rep. Young Kim (CA-40) could face her toughest race to date. In northern Los Angeles County, freshman Rep. George T. Whitesides (CA-27) might also face a tough challenge. And longtime Republican Appropriator Rep. Ken Calvert (CA-41) can’t take his race for granted.
Democratic Reps. Mike Levin (CA-49) and Raul Ruiz (CA-25) could be vulnerable if the political environment isn’t as favorable to Democrats as history would predict,
