The vast majority of House candidates are unable to withstand the partisan winds at the top of the ticket. But five House Democrats currently represent districts that Trump won in 2020 and is likely to win again, and in order to win reelection, they’ll need to convince a significant portion of Trump voters to cross party lines this November.
Reps. Matt Cartwright (PA-08) and Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), old-school progressives who represent blue-collar districts in the Rust Belt, are relying on their long records in their districts to retain support from their white working-class constituents who’ve swung toward Republicans. Reps. Jared Golden (ME-02), Mary Peltola (AK-AL), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03), the three co-chairs of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition, are touting their records of breaking with the national party as they attempt to win reelection in rural, coastal districts.
