
For Kansas’ U.S. representatives, there’s no place like Washington. Though the state’s congressional quartet is said to have lofty ambitions, none seem particularly enticed by its open gubernatorial contest. Republican Reps. Tracey Mann and Derek Schmidt are reportedly more interested in waging Senate bids down the line, while GOP Rep. Ron Estes appears content to continue climbing the ranks of the Ways and Means Committee. Democrats’ lone member of the delegation, Rep. Sharice Davids, has established a strong brand for herself in the Kansas City suburbs. So far, she hasn’t taken any steps toward a statewide bid.
Republicans tried to wrest back the 3rd District in 2022 redistricting by tossing in three conservative counties to dilute its liberal lean. But the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization effectively ended their hopes of ousting Davids overnight. After back-to-back double-digit losses, the GOP is unlikely to meaningfully contest the seat.
