Highlights from last night's primaries in Wisconsin and Minnesota:
- Progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar defeated her moderate primary opponent by double digits.
- Minnesota Republicans nominated controversial former NBA player Royce White to take on Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar instead of state and national Republicans’ preferred pick.
- Democrats nominated small business owner Rebecca Cooke to challenge GOP Rep. Derrick Van Orden in Wisconsin’s competitive 3rd District.
Rebecca Cooke, a small business owner and political fundraiser, clinched the Democratic nomination in western Wisconsin’s purple 3rd District with 50%, while state Rep. Katrina Shankland trailed her by eight points.
The primary had turned into a bit of a proxy fight between the moderate and progressive wings of the party, though the two leading candidates had few ideological differences. Cooke is backed by the moderate Blue Dog Coalition and the New Democrat Coalition, while Shankland, who had served in the state Assembly for over a decade, had the support of progressive Wisconsin Reps. Mark Pocan and Gwen Moore along with dozens of local elected officials.
