In an era of narrow majorities, the fight for control of the House is increasingly waged in the courts. Both parties are engaged with lawsuits targeting congressional maps across the country, since the opportunity to pick up even one or two seats through redistricting could hand them the House majority.

But court rulings this week took two redistricting opportunities off the table — at least for this cycle. The Supreme Court decided today to punt a challenge to the Louisiana congressional map until their next term — making it all but certain that the state will not have time to redraw its map ahead of the midterms. That’s a temporary victory for Democrats, who picked up a second House seat in the state last year after the map was redrawn to include two majority Black districts.
