Just when you thought the 2000 election couldn't get any more unusual, it does. On the Republican side a wounded frontrunner was beaten in New Hampshire by a whopping 18 percentage points and now faces unexpectedly difficult challenges in both South Carolina and Michigan. The race for the Democratic nomination has taken on an increasingly bitter tone in recent weeks, though Vice President Gore seems on the verge of locking up the nomination. A very close general election now looks increasingly likely. The fight for control of the House couldn't be any closer while on the other side of the Capitol dome, there are 15 Senate seats in play, which isn't likely to produce a Democratic majority but does provide a wide range of potential outcomes and a lot of possible turnovers.
