The 2000 elections are unlike any other in modern times. With just less than a year to go before the November 8 general election, the House is teetering on the edge with a 50.5 percent Republican majority and a 49.5 percent Democratic minority. There are 11 competitive Senate races, including at least eight that appear too close to call. While we still do not believe that Republican control of the Senate is in doubt, it looks increasingly likely that Republicans will lose at least one or two seats, setting up 2002 as a fight for control of that body. Unquestionably, there is an extremely competitive fight for the Democratic presidential nomination and at least in New Hampshire, the Republican presidential contest appears to be tightening up as well.
