A week ago, the American people were resigned to a choice between President Biden and former President Trump. Polls showed a good many were unhappy about it. Today, with Vice President Kamala Harris poised to top a new Democratic ticket, there is a curiosity about the campaign ahead and even an excitement among Democrats as the stomach-turning ride that is the 2024 election goes for another spin.

Whether Harris would have been the strongest possible Democratic candidate to emerge had this played out six, nine, or 12 months ago is at this point an academic question. It’s become clear that a competition or audition for the nomination is a luxury that Democrats can’t afford.

The 2024 contest looked to be the first time in 132 years that back-to-back presidents would face off, inviting a side-by-side comparison. The germane question would have been whether a voter thought they were better off before Jan. 20, 2021, or since. A Trump-Harris contest gives it a different dynamic.
