
Let’s face it: Keeping up with the current news cycle is exhausting and borderline impossible. At the White House, trade and tariff policies are being introduced, suspended and then restarted within a matter of days. President Donald Trump is signing executive orders at a breakneck pace, with most of them just as quickly landing in court. In Congress, the ongoing tussle over the tax cut bill between the House’s fiscal hardliners and their GOP colleagues in the Senate has more twists and turns than a corkscrew.
But there is one thing you can — and should — filter out of your media diet: any armchair punditry about the candidate Democrats should nominate to run in 2028. Pontification about how savvily — or stupidly — certain potential candidates are navigating the current political moment is sure to be a terrible predictor for how those candidates will be judged three years from now. It’s more than likely that the Democratic nominee in 2028 isn’t even on our radar screen right now.
