
Congressional Republicans are banking that their signature tax and budget legislation will define President Donald Trump's economic legacy and win over wallet-wary voters ahead of the midterms. The trouble for them so far is that Americans are hardly convinced that the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' will make their lives any better.
As Senate Republicans work to get the bill passed before the July 4 holiday, five new recent polls show significant opposition to the legislation, which still faces major hurdles before final passage. Overall, opposition to the bill is twice as high as support for it, and more Americans think that the legislation will hurt them than think it will help them.
If there is a silver lining for Republicans, it’s that many individual parts of the legislation — like tax cuts for those making under $100,000, an increase in the child-tax credit, and work requirements for Medicaid — are popular. However, at this point, Democratic voters are much more enthusiastic in opposition to the bill than Republicans are intensely in support of it.
