
It’s hard not to miss the jubilation among most Democrats amid their changing fortunes. Although many Democrats did not fully appreciate just how dire their straits were prior to President Biden’s June 27 debate debacle, his odds of winning were not good before that. The debate served to jerk many of them out of a state of denial over voter concerns about Biden’s age and health.
But their euphoria reminds me of a song from my era by The Doors, in which Jim Morrison sang: “Well, I been down so very damn long, That it looks like up to me.”
No question, things are better for Democrats than they had been, but better doesn’t mean winning. In fact, it doesn’t even mean they’re ahead at this point. It simply means “not dead,” which is better than where they were. There are some paradoxical aspects to this. The totality of Biden’s situation was far grimmer than the mere poll numbers suggested. Now, there is a plausible way that Vice President Kamala Harris can win, but more because the dynamics have changed,
