ARLINGTON, VA (February 28, 2025) — The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter is delighted to name Carrie Dann as Managing Editor.
As Managing Editor, Carrie will play a pivotal leadership role in CPR's editorial and business operations. In addition to working alongside editor-in-chief, Amy Walter, to hone the brand’s incisive nonpartisan analysis, Carrie will work closely with the operations team to further expand its audience of readers and subscribers. As The Cook Political Report enters its fifth decade, she will help one of Washington’s original political newsletters evolve to meet the digital moment while remaining faithful to its founding principle of providing smart, well-informed, contextualized coverage of down-ballot races and the overall political climate.
Carrie comes to CPR from NBC News, where she most recently served as Senior Washington Editor, overseeing the Capitol Hill team. During nearly 18 years at NBC, Carrie also served as a political reporter and embedded campaign journalist, covering 10 national election cycles for the network.
”I’ve been an admirer of Carrie and her work for as long as I can remember. She’s smart, tireless and insightful. Her sophisticated understanding of campaign politics and years of experience in publishing and managing a political newsletter make her a perfect fit for the Cook Political Report,” said Amy Walter, “I’m thrilled to finally be able to call her a colleague.”
“Throughout my career," said Dann, "the Cook Political Report has helped me and countless other journalists cover politics in a more balanced, nuanced, and contextualized way. I could not be more thrilled to be a part of this venerated organization, especially at this pivotal moment in American politics.”
With the addition of Dann, Ally Flinn, who launched her career a decade ago as CPR’s Web Editor and has served as Managing Editor since 2021, will now co-lead the business team as Chief Operating Officer. Flinn will work alongside Chief Business Officer, Kathryn Hamm.
“The most satisfying aspect of strengthening the foundation of our digital systems is recognizing the direct impact it has on our subscribers’ experience,” says Hamm. “Our analysts – Amy, David Wasserman, Jessica Taylor, Erin Covey & Matthew Klein – are the best in the business, and Ally has been an innovator and invaluable contributor to CPR’s digital evolution, amplifying their insights and analysis.”
“Adding Carrie’s deep editorial experience and work on NBC’s First Read promises more great things ahead for Washington’s most valuable primary source for U.S. election analysis.”
At NBC, Carrie appeared frequently on MSNBC, NBC News Now, and The Chuck ToddCast. She served as a main author of the First Read political newsletter, and she led writing and research teams for the network’s presidential debates and election night coverage.
Carrie grew up outside Washington D.C. and attended the University of Virginia. When she’s not obsessing over polling crosstabs, she is a passionate advocate for the health benefits of spending time outdoors.
