It’s now officially 2022, and Republicans are still searching for a top recruit against who should be one of the most vulnerable Senate Democratic incumbents, New Hampshire’s Maggie Hassan.
Nearly two months after Gov. Chris Sununu stunned in announcing he would run for re-election instead of challenging Hassan — which would have been perhaps the marquee Senate matchup of the cycle – there’s still no major viable GOP challenger who’s stepped up to run. Some of that is likely due to the timing of Sununu’s decision, just ahead of the beginning of the holiday season that left many newly thinking about running after long assuming the nomination was Sununu’s for the taking — and plotting gubernatorial bids instead under the assumption that would be vacant. Plus, many candidates wouldn’t want to announce near the end of the year and the fourth quarter fundraising period. Now that it’s a new year and an election year, national and state Republicans do expect the field to begin to build.
