Hey. This is David Wasserman, senior editor and elections analyst for the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter. And with the vote count certified in nearly every state, it's a good time to revisit the question of whether Donald Trump and Republicans really received a mandate in this election.Now in the end, he won the popular vote by about a point and a half, which is less than half of the margin he was ahead when we first launched our national popular vote tracker two days after the election. And in fact, this is the closest result in the popular vote since the two thousand election, where Al Gore actually narrowly won the popular vote over George w Bush. And Donald Trump's effective margin of victory in the electoral college, even though he swept all seven swing states, was just two hundred twenty nine thousand
