State Sen. Tom Garrett, a military veteran, former prosecutor who already represents plenty of the rural counties in the 5th CD, won the GOP nomination for this open seat at a May 14 party convention. But some Democrats, remembering the upset Tom Perriello pulled here in 2008 when campus and African-American turnout spiked, aren't ready to concede this GOP-leaning seat.

Democrats have a credible candidate in Albemarle County Board Chair Jane Dittmar, who had $282,000 on hand to Garrett's $54,000 at the end of June. Furthermore, they believe Garrett stepped in it when he told a local newspaper Trump simply "hurt someone's feelings" when he attacked Khizr and Ghazala Khan, who live in Charlottesville and are 5th CD voters. This is a long shot worth watching.
