RACE ANALYSIS
The Bottom Line
Updated: May 22, 2020
Blue Dog Rep. Dan Lipinski became the first incumbent of 2020 to lose a primary when marketing executive and progressive activist Marie Newman beat him 48 percent to 44 percent in the March primary. The pro-life Lipinski's ouster became a cause celebre for a host of progressive icons and groups including EMILY's List, NARAL, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, all of whom rallied behind Newman.
In truth, Lipinski's defeat was a long time coming. The son of Chicago's southwest side Democratic machine had barely held off Newman, 51 percent to 49 percent, in the 2018 primary. But more liberal, younger newcomers overtake older Catholic Democrats every year, and an unknown number of older voters may have stayed home as the pandemic hurt turnout on March 17. Newman is assured victory in the fall.
