RACE ANALYSIS
The Bottom Line
Updated: Aug 7, 2020
On Tuesday, freshman GOP Rep. Steve Watkins, who is facing voter fraud charges among other personal problems, lost his primary to State Treasurer Jake LaTurner 49 percent to 34 percent. But the result is also a setback for Democratic Topeka Mayor Michelle De La Isla, who likely needed to face Watkins to have any chance in a district Trump carried by 18 points in 2016.
