RACE ANALYSIS
The Bottom Line
Updated: Nov 22, 2019
NY-12: Carolyn Maloney (D) - Manhattan’s East Side, Queens: Astoria
Solid Democratic. Maloney, now 73 and in her 14th term, was just elected chair of the House Oversight Committee. But back home, she faces a rematch against attorney Suraj Patel, who took a higher-than-expected 43 percent against her in the 2018 primary by arguing Maloney hasn't done enough in three decades in Congress to address skyrocketing housing costs and failing Subway tracks.
Maloney fought Patel off in 2018 by accusing him of taking a homestead exemption in Indiana and pointing out his family's hotel business was cited for labor violations. But her biggest advantage in 2020 could be that it won't be a one-on-one ballot in June: anti-sexual harassment advocate Erica Vladimer and at least two others are running as well, which could split Maloney's opposition.
