RACE ANALYSIS
The Bottom Line
Updated: Jun 9, 2020
GOP state Sen. Cliff Bentz will succeed longtime Rep. Greg Walden as the next member from this rural eastern Oregon seat after winning the May primary with 32 percent. Bentz, an attorney and rancher from the state's remote southeastern corner, was outspent by 2018 GOP gubernatorial nominee Knute Buehler (22 percent) and oil futures trader Jimmy Crumpacker (18 percent), but sometimes money isn't everything.
Buehler, and orthopedic surgeon, blasted Crumpacker for carpetbagging into the district from Portland while Crumpacker (who was endorsed by Oregon Right to Life) hammered Buehler for saying he was pro-choice in the governor's race. Meanwhile, Bentz, 68, was endorsed by a broad network of county sheriffs and commissioners after representing over a third of the state's land area in the state senate.
