RACE ANALYSIS
The Bottom Line
Updated: Jan 31, 2020
Doyle, the dean of the delegation, has held this Pittsburgh seat since 1994 and now chairs a key Energy and Commerce subcommittee. But for the first time in decades, he's facing a credible primary on April 28 against progressive Jerry Dickinson, a University of Pittsburgh law professor who draws inspiration from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and has raised $127,000.
Dickinson, who is African-American, supports a Green New Deal and will attack Doyle for accepting $220,000 in campaign donations from oil and gas interests over the past three decades. But Dickinson remains a long shot: Doyle can point to his vote to impeach President Trump as an example of his alignment with the base, and plenty of 18th CD primary voters aren't progressive activists.
