RACE ANALYSIS
The Bottom Line
Updated: Oct 8, 2020
Plenty of people wrote this seat off when GOP Rep. Will Hurd announced his retirement — after all, Democratic Air Force veteran Gina Ortiz Jones nearly beat Hurd in 2018 and banked $4 million by June. But Trump is improving on his 2016 performance with Latinos (the 23rd CD is 69 percent Hispanic), and GOP former Navy cryptologist Tony Gonzales will remind voters Jones conveniently added Ortiz to her name to run for Congress (she's Filipina, not Latina). It's not over yet.
