RACE ANALYSIS

The Bottom Line

Updated: Sep 13, 2016

GOP Rep. Richard Hanna made national news when he announced he will be voting for Hillary Clinton, but he is retiring this fall and the race for his seat is extremely competitive. Hanna's nemesis from the 2014 primary, conservative Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney, won a divisive June GOP primary with 41 percent of the vote. Meanwhile, Democrats are enthusiastic about Broome County Legislator Kim Myers, an heir to the Dick's Sporting Goods empire.

But this isn't a typical two-way race: multi-millionaire Martin Babinec, the founder of a cloud-based human resources company, launched his own "Upstate Jobs" party in June and seeded his campaign with $1 million. He's aired a heavy rotation of ads promoting his job creation record, and an August poll taken for Tenney by Public Opinion Strategies showed him with 23 percent, within striking distance of Tenney (33 percent) and Myers (27 percent).

An important question is what the popular Hanna ultimately decides to do. He has pointedly refused to endorse Tenney, and he could either get behind Babinec (which would probably help Tenney), or endorse Myers. Democrats contend Tenney is way too conservative for this middle-of-the-road district, but they may have to mount a two-front war, Trump could perform relatively well in this blue-collar district.
