Fresh off a victory Tuesday in the Ohio Senate primary, Donald Trump’s next endorsement on the line in the open Nebraska governor’s race could bring him a loss.
With Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts term-limited, the former president lined up behind wealthy agribusinessman Charles W. Herbster back in October. As we wrote when we first previewed the race in March, for a long time the race looked like it would be another GOP proxy fight between Herbster and University of Nebraska Board of Regents member Jim Pillen, who’s been endorsed by Ricketts. But it’s now become a three-way contest with state Sen. Brett Lindstrom on the rise, and sources in the state say it’s truly a toss up of who among the trio will prevail.
In recent weeks, multiple women have come forward accusing Herbster of sexual misconduct, saying he groped them in the past. Herbster has denied the allegations, and, unsurprisingly, Trump has stuck with him, holding a rally on his behalf this past Sunday. But the accusations are credible.
