For weeks now, we have been saying that it was not a question of whether Democrats would take control of the House, it was simply a question of whether Republicans could do anything to stop it. The political environment alone has been and continues to be bad enough to sweep Republicans from the majority. But, Republicans heeded the early warnings and have been preparing for the storm. They have invested heavily in a strategy that seeks to define the Democratic challenger early on, thereby preventing that Democrat from being seen as a credible alternative.

Three polls taken by Mason-Dixon for the Denver Post in the first week of October and released this week help to illustrate just how these two forces - the political environment and political strategy - are playing out in three different congressional districts in the state.

In the 7 th district, Democratic former state Sen. Ed Perlmutter was leading Rick O'Donnell, the former head of the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, 45 percent to 39 percent.
