Although five-term Democratic Rep. Mark Udall (CO-02) has made no official announcement, he has hinted for some time about his desire to serve statewide. In a statement yesterday, Udall said "In 2005, I made clear that my intentions were to run for the U.S. Senate in 2008, and my intentions haven't changed."

If Udall does run for the Senate it would mean that this district would be open for only the second time since 1986.

Even so, this district is not exactly an alluring target for Republicans. Sen. John Kerry won the district with 58 percent of the vote in 2004. The CD has a PVI of D+8, and no Republican represents a district as Democratic as this one. GOP Rep. Mike Castle (DE-AL) represents the most Democratic district in the country at D+7.

The bulk of the vote (about 40 percent) comes from liberal Boulder County. Another approximately 30 percent comes from fast growing Adams County. Suburban Jefferson County makes up about eight percent of the vote and the rest is scattered among the rural mountain
