OPEN: David Obey (D)
Toss Up. To the horror of many longtime Obey backers, Democratic state Sen. Julie Lassa has turned out to be a rather weak candidate and is running a lackluster campaign, while former Ashland County prosecutor and MTV Real World cast member Sean Duffy has come across as the far more polished and energetic candidate. In one great ad, a plaid-shirted Duffy, a former lumberjack competition champion, literally log rolls a “career politician” into a lake, taking a subtle swipe at both Obey and the Madison-tenured Lassa. Meanwhile, the DCCC and EMILY’s List have had to seriously bail Lassa out, and Democrats’ ads portraying Duffy as a no-show district attorney are only starting to erode Duffy’s single-digit lead. At this point, the Democratic heritage of this northern Wisconsin district and heavy DCCC spending are the only factors that could save Lassa, but it’s tight.
