Most of the political intrigue in Wisconsin today centers on Gov. Scott Walker's reelection race, the criminal investigation into his coordination with GOP outside groups, and his future on the national stage. But the most competitive congressional race in the Badger State is the 6th CD, where 35-year incumbent GOP Rep. Tom Petri is retiring. On paper, the seat ought to stay in Republican hands, but Democrats are hoping for a lucky break.

Three main GOP contenders are vying for the 6th CD nomination in the August 12 primary, including state Sens. Joe Leibham and Glenn Grothman and state Rep. Duey Stroebel. But given his past statements, Grothman could well turn out to be Wisconsin's version of Michele Bachmann and a problematic candidate in a general election, which makes Democratic Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris worth watching.
