A competitive Senate race in Mississippi? In a presidential year? Really?

As crazy as it sounds, a new poll does indeed show that appointed GOP Sen. Roger Wicker will have a fight on his hands in his bid to complete the remainder of former Sen. Trent Lott's term.

Republican Gov. Haley Barbour appointed Wicker to the seat shortly after Lott resigned from the Senate in December. The race in November is a special election to complete the last four years of Lott's term. The seat will be up again in 2012.

Wicker was elected in 1994 to represent the 1 st congressional district that encompasses the northeast corner of the state. It takes in the counties along the state's northern border with Tennessee, runs down the eastern border to Columbus and includes Tupelo. He won the 1994 contest with 63 percent and held the seat easily.
