[EDITOR’S NOTE: This is an excerpt from a longer article that appeared August 7, 2008 on the Democrats’ chances of gaining enough seats to have a 60-seat majority in the next Congress.]

Moving on to Oklahoma where GOP Sen. Jim Inhofe is facing Democratic state Sen. Andrew Rice in his bid for a full third term.

Inhofe is of a breed of conservative Republican that Democrats love to hate. He takes pride in his ideological rigidity, and his claim that global warming is a hoax and his efforts to make English the nation’s official language has infuriated many elements within the Democratic Party. Still, Inhofe has faced underwhelming opponents in the past, holding his Senate seat and a House seat before that with relative ease.

Part of Inhofe’s success is that he runs solid and well-funded campaigns. His first television ad in this race highlighted his stubbornness.
