Republican Sen. Tom Coburn’s decision to resign at the end of this Congress creates a special election to fill the remaining two years of his term. The special election will coincide with the November general election. Coburn’s successor could be sworn in before the start of the new Congress in January of 2015, depending when the election results are certified and when Coburn officially resigns his seat. Oklahoma is a reliably Republican state, so all the action in this race will be in the June 24 Republican primary. There are two announced candidates so far: U.S. Rep. Jim Lankford and state House Speaker T.W. Shannon. This seat will remain safely in Republicans’ hands.
