If the 1991 elections for state offices are any indication, 1992 will be a year of tremendous upheaval for incumbent governors who are seeking re-election and uncertainty for their challengers. Both of the incumbent govemors who could constitutionally seek re-election this year did Republican Buddy Remer inLouisiana and Democrat Ray Mabus in Mississippi and both lost. In the third gubernatorial race, Wallace Wilkinson could not seek re+lection, and the seat remained in Democratic hands New Jersey and Virginia both held legislative elections, and the party of the sitting governor took beatings in both cases. In Virginia, Democrats lost considerable ground in the state Senate.
