Connecticut: The 2010 race for what was an open seat was epic. There were competitive primaries on both sides and a general election that was so close it took a several days before the winner was announced. In the end, former Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy beat Republican businessman Tom Foley by about 6,400 votes out over 1.1 million ballots cast. It looks as if 2014 will be a rematch. Foley easily won the GOP primary with 56 percent of the vote. Despite Connecticut’s solid blue hue, Malloy has had a difficult first term and is not all that popular with voters. He inherited a $3.5 billion budget shortfall that he closed by raising taxes, including the sales tax. Although he claimed a budget surplus this year, it turned out to be premature. Foley has remained active in state and Republican politics. He can run a buyer’s remorse campaign, arguing that Malloy’s plan to solve the state fiscal problems and create jobs hasn’t worked.
