Arizona: The general election for this open seat has been a long time in coming. Republicans held a protracted six-way primary on August 26. State Treasurer and Cold Stone Creamery founder Doug Ducey won the nomination with 36 percent of the vote, followed by Mesa Mayor Scott Smith with 22 percent, and former GoDaddy.com executive Christine Jones with 16 percent. Ducey will now face Fred DuVal, the former chairman of the state’s Board of Regents and a former senior staffer in the Clinton White House, in the general election. DuVal did not have any primary opposition and thus was able to spend months raising money and putting an organization together. Neither candidate is especially well defined going into the general, meaning that both parties are scrambling to fill in their respective opponent’s profile. Democrats argue that Arizona is on its way to becoming a swing state, and that they have a shot here.
