July 19, 2023 update: As we expected, just over a week after we previewed a possible open seat race, New Hampshire Republican Gov. Chris Sununu did indeed announce his retirement. His decision shifts our rating from Solid Republican to Toss Up, and gives Democrats their best pickup opportunity on the 2024 gubernatorial board.

Earlier this month, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu passed on entering the GOP presidential primary fray. Now it's sounding like he could pass on running for an unprecedented fifth two-year term in 2024 as well.

On WEEI's Greg Hill Show on June 16, the governor said he is "probably out of here in 18 months or so. I don't know, I don't think I'm going to run again." Sununu continued: "I'll make a firm decision this summer. Not leaning towards it. We're crushing it in New Hampshire. This isn't a career, it's public service. Someone else kind of needs to take the mantle. I've got kids to put through college. I don't know. You go out
