Saturday's closely watched special election to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Rep. Bob Livingston, R-La., lived up to expectations -- and surpassed them. Former GOP Gov. David Treen barely eked out a first place finish with 25 percent in the state's 1st District, and now seems to be the underdog to 37-year-old GOP state Rep. David Vitter -- who garnered 22 percent -- in the May 29 runoff.

The political world's most famous ophthalmologist, Monica Monica, collapsed in the closing days of the campaign from her neck-and-neck fight for second place with Vitter, ending up in fourth place with 16 percent. David Duke, the former Ku Klux Klan leader and state legislator, finished in third place, with a surprisingly strong 19 percent. Rounding out the field were state Rep. Bill Strain, the only credible Democrat in the race, who came in fifth with 11 percent, and attorney/New Orleans Zephyrs baseball club owner Rob Couhig, who finished last among the credible candidates with 6 percent.

Much of the discussion since election night has been over Duke's 19 percent
