While it now appears there will be fewer very competitive Senate races in 1988 than in 1986, there still are a number of seats up for grabs and several very tight races shaping up. Private polls show that three incumbent Senators, Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Chic Hecht (R-NV) currently run even or behind potential general election challengers while another, Quentin Burdick runs even or behind a potential Democratic primary election rival.
