Vice President George Bush maintains a wide lead for the Republican presidential nomination while the Rev. Jesse Jackson holds only a tenuous advantage on the Democratic side, according to a recent national public opinion survey conducted for the Cook Political Report and the Government Research Corporation by Cambridge Reports, Inc. The Boston-based polling firm interviewed by telephone a total sample of 1500 adults between May 16 and June 1. Of the total sample, 1257 were registered voters, with 48 percent identifying themselves as Democrats or independent but leaning to the Democratic party and 39 percent Republican or independent but leaning to the GOP.
