Democrats are pinching themselves these days over how well things are going for them. In the last four independent national polls, President Clinton has held an 11- to 21-point lead over presumed GOP nominee Bob Dole in the two-way trial heats. In the last four independent national polls that have asked the question, Democrats have shown a 4- to 7-point advantage in the generic Congressional ballot test. And, most Senate race developments in recent weeks have been favorable for them, as well. It's important to keep in mind, though, that six months remain between now and the November 5 elections, amounting to several lifetimes in American politics. Indeed, it can be argued that we haven't seen six stable, static months in U.S. politics in over half a decade. History argues strongly that broad pronouncements made about elections six months hence are almost inevitably wrong.
