While Republicans are entering the 1986 House and Senate elections in a somewhat defensive position, the GOP has a good chance of scoring significant gains in next year's 36 gubernatorial elections. Democrats, who currently enjoy a 34 to 16 edge in governorships, could end up barely holding a majority of the state houses if the GOP gets a few breaks.
