Of the five open Republican-held seats on the ballot in 2010, this will be the easiest for the party to hold. Republican Sen. Sam Brownback is making good on his promise to serve just two terms. Although he is leaving the Senate, Brownback is likely to be on the ballot next year as the GOP gubernatorial nominee. The race to replace him, though, is more likely to be fought in the August 3 Republican primary than in the November general election.

Despite the fact that Kansas has a Democratic Governor and the party holds one of the state’s four congressional seats, it is hard to make the case that Kansas is anything but a very red state. In addition to three congressional districts, Republicans hold both Senate seats and have large majorities in both chambers of the state legislature, with 31 of 40 seats in the state Senate and 77 of 125 seats in the state House.
