New Mexico’s Democratic tilt is making it difficult for Republicans to close the deal here. While they have a solid nominee in former U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, Democratic nominee U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich is running an equally strong race. This contest quickly became a debate over whether Wilson is too conservative for the state or whether Heinrich is too liberal. Ultimately, in a state like New Mexico, an argument that someone is too conservative will trump the assertion that someone is too liberal. Heinrich now leads Wilson by high single digits and is at or close to 50 percent. Wilson will need some real breaks if she is to close the gap. The race is in the Lean Democratic column.
