Full Bio:
Brown grew up in Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder and earned a law degree from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Before being elected into public office, Brown practiced family and juvenile law and taught at Portland State University.
Brown was appointed to the state House of Representatives in 1991 and, after election to two more terms, was elected to the Oregon Senate. In 1998, she was chosen Senate Democratic leader and became the Senate majority leader in 2004. In 2008, Brown was elected Oregon secretary of state and was re-elected in 2012. While in this role, she championed policies that reduced bureaucratic red tape for Oregon businesses, strengthened transparency of political campaign contributions and, with passage of Oregon’s New Motor Voter law, put ballots in the hands of tens of thousands of new voters.
Brown resides in Salem with her husband Dan.
